Romancing the Midwest Accessibility Statement
Romancing the Midwest is committed to creating a welcoming and accessible experience for all attendees, authors, vendors, sponsors, and volunteers.
We recognize that accessibility needs vary, and we strive to foster an inclusive environment where everyone can participate safely, comfortably, and with dignity.
A Small-Run Event Commitment
Romancing the Midwest is a small-run, independently organized event. As such, we may not have access to every accessibility modality, including but not limited to:
On-site sign language interpretation
Live captioning services
Dedicated interpreter or aide services
That said, accessibility matters to us. If you require an accommodation not listed here, we encourage you to reach out in advance. While we cannot guarantee that all requests will be accommodated, we will make every reasonable effort to meet needs when possible.
Venue Accessibility
RTM works with our venue to provide:
ADA-compliant entrances and pathways
Designated accessible parking stalls are located on the lower level of the parking structure in front of the Level Three entrance. Curb cuts for wheelchairs are located close to accessible parking
General parking for Monona Terrace is located on Levels Three, Four, and Five. Easy curb cuts provide entry from all three levels. Accessible parking meters are also available by the drive-through/drop-off lanes for ease of mobility
Accessible restrooms as well as gender-inclusive restrooms are available on all floors
Elevator access where applicable
Flexible seating and table layouts, when possible
The venue has Braille and large-print signage throughout the entire space, as well as the ability to provide assistive listening devices in most areas, including the Madison Ballroom, Lecture Hall, and all meeting rooms.
Sensory and Mobility Considerations
The event environment may include crowds, ambient noise, flashing displays, and strong scents typical of book fairs.
A quiet space will be provided during event hours
Mobility aids, assistive devices, and service animals are welcome in accordance with ADA guidelines
Attendees are encouraged to take breaks as needed
Service Animal Support
Monona Terrace welcomes service animals and complies with all ADA guidelines for aid companions. We provide ADA-compliant support for trained service animals with proper supervision.
Service animals must remain under their handler's control at all times and be housebroken. Handlers and event organizers are responsible for any damage or injury caused by a service animal.
Communication and Support
If you require assistance related to:
Mobility or seating
Sensory sensitivities
Visual or hearing access
Other accessibility-related needs
Please contact the Romancing the Midwest team prior to the event so we can discuss available options.
Respect and Enforcement
Accessibility is part of our Code of Conduct. Any behavior that interferes with another person’s access, accommodations, or safety will not be tolerated.
Ongoing Improvement
Romancing the Midwest is committed to learning, growing, and improving accessibility where possible. We welcome feedback and view it as a valuable part of building a better event.
